Hurricane Ike * the Conclusion

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:59 pm by jazzyjeb

Sorry about the abrupt interruption to my blogs.  We lost our phone and that took our internet.

The storm was on a Friday night.  Monday I went back to work in the company bunker.  It was built to protect out command center and data center.  It’s hurricane proof, tornado proof and what ever else you can come up with.  It has giant generators and of course never lost power.   They also had caterers.  The A/C and hot food was a welcome site.

I worked there Monday and half of Tuesday when I was sent out to do some “volunteer” work at the staging area at the race track.  It was hot but interesting.  I went back again on Wednesday.

I was afraid that I was going to have to cancel my long awaited trip to CA for the CA State Ladies Poker Championship but my boss approved it so on Wed afternoon we were off to LA.    I slept most of the way which showed just how tired I was.  I rarely sleep on planes in the daytime.  We had a great trip which I’ll blog about later.

We arrived home Monday about 6……4 hours AFTER  the electricity was turned on. Yipee.  We were really thrilled.  We also had phone so the internet was back up.

I also arrived home to find out I had been assingned Emergency Operations Duty at a new staging site they were setting up.  I spent all week working 13 hour days in a hot dusty tent surrounded by 1000 electric utility trucks.  I was joyous last night when I found out I was being released from that duty and I would get home before 9PM.   Since then I’ve been holding my breath everytime my phone rings.  I don’t want to be assingned another duty.   I’m ready to go back to my regular job.

Everynight I say my prayers for those that lost so much in the storm.  I can’t watch it on the news though.  It just brings back to many memories of Katrina and what my family went through then.

I appreciate my home,  my internet,  my washer and dryer,  my fridge and most of all MY A/C.  I’m also grateful to have Gyla to share this adventure with me.

Thanks for reading the blogs and sending us all your thoughts and prayers.  We sure put them to good use.

Hugs.

Janice
