Hurricane Ike 2 weeks later
Sorry about the abrupt end to my Hurricane Ike updates. We lost our phone and there went internet.
It’s been a crazy two weeks. I’ve done lots of hurricane duty through my job. We also had a very welcome trip to California. I was skeered my boss wouldn’t let me go but in the end everything worked out. We even got on an earlier flight.
We were without power from Friday until we left for CA on Wednesday. We returned to Houston on Monday to find it had been turned on that afternoon. That was the best homecoming gift I’ve ever gotten. We had loaned our generator to our new neighbors to use while we were gone. I sure was going to hate having to take it back.
All this week I had hurricane duty out in the field. Basically I sat in a very hot tent with about 1000 electric utility trucks coming and going. My job was basically as a “hey you”. I didn’t have a whole lot to do and it was miserably hot but I did my part. I was “released” from that assignment yesterday and am still holding my breath that I don’t get assigned another. My company is on the downhill slide now. Hopefully I’ll be back in my regular office on Monday for the first time since the storm.
In all everyone has learned and grown from the experience. I pray nightly for those that lost so much but I can’t watch it on TV. It’s just too close to home bringing back memories of my family and Katrina. Between that and the financial crisis the country is I have to admit that right now I am playing Ostrich and sticking my head in the sand. One can only deal with so much stress.
It’s good to be back home at my own computer with the A/C running and clean clothes in the closet. We will slowly restock the fridge. That’s about all we lost. It looks like FEMA might pick up the generator because of Gyla’s asthma. We are going to have our roof inspected. Hopefully we won’t need a new one. The deductable for us is $3500. We don’t want to have to cough that up.
So that’s the end of my Hurricane Ike story.
